We now break from regular mind-body-malarkey programming for a commercial message. (I watched “Advice” and “Education.”)
Also: a letter on the topic of unconscious racism (someone told me the comments are amazing)
.........................................
Proposition: The way a campaign offers itself to the voter says everything about its social vision. Both the way it knows itself, and how it sees America.
Proposition: Almost all racism in western society is self-unconscious.
Proposition: For historical and everyday reasons, the bedrock of anti-black racism in America is fear of black men’s sexuality.
Conclusion: The McCain campaign believes the one really good reason to vote GOP is that you’re racist.
Yes, I agree with them! The only reason to vote for this jingoist deregulator and his girl Friday is if you’re racist. Too bad Obama’s too nice to run a straight “John McCain is a fool” campaign. I guess the Dems feel that would be insulting to fools.
It might take a while for us to realize that the age of decadence is our political culture is over. Too bad the election will happen before that. This whole fall is blowing my historical mind.

I am trying to pretend that I am not in ‘history in the making’. But I know I am, I should be saving all the newspapers for the grandkids.

So you believe the McCain-Palin campaign is more about racism than it’s about general stupidity, eh? They may be racist and sexuality-phobic but I believe those issues spring from a deeper source.

I wish I wasn’t so busy because I REALLY want to dig into this topic. I’m sure you’ve heard about the crazy Christian fundamentalists calling Obama the anti-Christ (for real, not just as a joke)- it’s their way of attacking him without admitting that it’s his race they hate.
I’m so tired of how low the conservative right can go…
The fear is definitely connected to black men’s sexuality. I heard a relatively sane man on PBS bring up the fact that there are conservatives who fear that Obama will suddenly become “the angry black man” once he’s in office. It made me laugh, but also made me slump my shoulders knowing that if people are that far gone in their backwards thinking, there may not be much hope.
Such a joyful comment I’m leaving.

There was a really good Op-Ed by Brent Staples in the NYT yesterday. Kind of a Racism 101 for white people. Made me remember how naive I’ve been wishing Obama would show more passion.
BTW, I want to mention that I’m hilariously behind on email. I’ll get back to it eventually, but it’s just several hours I haven’t had lately. Nothing personal.

Yeah.
And you are also behind in making the ‘letter’ link above actually go to the letter…

Oops. I fixed it.
Also, for Liz. A friend just sent this. I didn’t read it, but it’s supposed to be the weirdest story ever?
Between Anti-christ and the Messiah, I guess we’re in the apocalypse one way or another. Probably it’s just that the Hadron collider sucked us through to the other side the week before last and we STILL haven’t figured out we’re all dead.

I’d like to comment on this post, but I’m going to have to suspend all chit-chat and just focus on bailing out wall street.

sigh.
why am I reading your blog when I have about 10 hours of work to do, but only have 3-4 to crank it out? Damn you for posting that link! It was so juicy I just spent a lot of time reading it, fuming, watching the video, reading the comments, fuming… then feeling hopeful, very very hopeful, that Palin might just do herself (+ McCain) in. She’s disintegrating before our eyes. It’s fantastic.
Oh, and that creepy religious stuff to boot? Are you kidding me? Witch craft?? It is 2008, right?
okay.
over and out.

Ah, Liz. I thought you’d like it. :)
People keep saying I’m making them do things even though I’m barely blogging!

You instructed me to post photos of myself but I haven’t done that yet. Maybe this perception people have that you’re making people do stuff just comes from a few random coincidences.

I’m still waiting Carl…
BTW, wow.
