Holy Climaxes · 13 February 2008
Some threads I want to tie together before they go away. It being Valentine's Day reminds me, I suppose.
The joke about a well-hung God (comment 7). The moment of relief in the Violent Femme’s angry serenade. The moment King David really saw God (in Bathsheba).
And before all that, this wonderful thing from John Donne.
Holy Sonnet XIV
As yet but knock; breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

Question. Valentine’s Day at the owl house is about old film, and some good merciless work on the ossified mass that is my left trapezius. Probably Cary Grant something. Or… maybe Wong Kar-Wai. I dunno. Suggestion box is open.

Ah well, for me it’s always “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, but I’m silly like that.

Owl & V: Happy Valentine’s Day to you both!

You could go ironic-silly and see Guy Maddin’s Saddest Music in the World. Maybe the fireworks in To Catch a Thief? Or go really old school and see some of Ernst Lubitsch’s stuff.

Holy Sonnet XV
I loved you for your beauty
but that doesn’t make a fool of me:
you were in it for your beauty too
and I loved you for your body
there’s a voice that sounds like God to me
declaring, declaring, declaring that your body’s really you
And I loved you when our love was blessed
and I love you now there’s nothing left
but sorrow and a sense of overtime
and I missed you since the place got wrecked
And I just don’t care what happens next
looks like freedom but it feels like death
it’s something in between, I guess
it’s CLOSING TIME

FINAL HOLY SONNET
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58NrElSofiQ&NR=1
It’s been a long way
I tried hard not to fall apart
Every night I pray
And your voice is singing in my heart
I have been waiting
A long time for you to take my hand
Loving and hating
A desire that I don’t understand
I can’t breath, I can’t sleep
Why can’t I get through to you?
I can’t think, I can’t speak
What am I to do?
Destiny
I’ve been looking for something to guide me
Destiny
Even though I’ve tried I can’t deny you
If I let you go, I’d betray my soul
I know that this is something more
Even though nothing’s spoken for,
a way that you will feel the same ‘bout me
Destiny
Read the stars and see my scars
I feel so low when you’re away
So reach out, it’s not far
Listen to me pray
Destiny
I’ve been looking for something to guide me
Destiny
Even though I tried I can’t deny you
If I let you go (let you go)
I betray my soul (my soul)
I know that this is something more
Even though (even though), nothing’s spoken for (spoken for)
A way that you will feel the same
‘bout mee.. ooohhh
If I let you go (let you go)
I betray my soul (my soul)
I know this is something more
Even though, (even though) nothing spoken for (spoken for)
I pray that you will feel the same ‘bout me
Destiny
Faith is within me
Destiny

Wings of Desire is the most romantic movie ever. Angel falling from heaven to be with his love…
the poem “The Child”. Ahh.

I hope you and the sangha are doing well today, wise owl, on this difficult day to practice aparigraha.

Owl, you had sent me that sonnet not so long ago. How that mirrors the change of seasons — winter turns to spring!

That I may rise, and stand, o’erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new
Yes, Jean and Cody, the whole transformation thing. Hard to take a back seat on it, because it is so full of life. It is life.
But that is the deal for us. The little bit of aparigraha changes the tone of all of it, lightens it, makes it less personal, but actually increases the space for the changes of season to be beautiful.
Relatedly, I’m noting that Zee broke up with me, on my blog, with a Sonnet, on Valentines Day. Break, blow, burn.
