Hey! Ohio and Pennsylvania, two big old rustbelt caches of swing votes, have been called for Obama. You can go to bed now and sleep peacefully.
...Fade to black…

yes! you can say that—- a thrilling drama for sure. After listening to him speak tonight, I let out this huge sigh of relief- come mid-January, I will no longer have to listen to a dip shit president bumble around with the English language. Obama is a joy to listen to. I feel like the face of America has been given a huge face lift- hillbilly OUT, intelligent, progressive, thoughtful man IN. Yea for the world.

Great graphic!

This is insane, just watched Obaman’s speech and ended up wiping a couple of tears away, my cynicism and good old British reserve in dust around my ankles. Haven’t been this choked up since I watched Yul Brynner shoot Tony Curtis in Taras Bulber… when I was eight!
Posted by: grimmly · Nov 5, 05:48 AM · #
I bet the global stock market will respond with optimism too…
There was much rejoicing on the streets of the East Village last night.

The haneous Prop 8 Passed. It will not stand for long.
For now, but not for long, it’s about race.
I don’t have many words. Just living it.
I worried a bit that Obama’s turning the last 5 min of his speech into “Yes We Can” rap would be bad for rap and hip-hop in the long run (aren't they necessarily subaltern/critical?), but... nah. Check it
Posted by: (0v0) · Nov 5, 09:51 AM · #
I tried Googling ‘haneous prop 8’ but didn’t find whatever it is you have been referring to. Where does the ‘haneous’ bit come from?
I can’t believe the word ‘fuck’ appears on your blog. This is supposed to be the beginning of no more fuck.

Oh no. What will I do without the F word? Get a vocabulary?
My fellow owls! It is the dawn of a new era! The “post-racial” era. The post-ironic era. The post-dynastic era.
And, most of all, THE POST-F-WORD era. Now let me be clear. The F word should not be a part of our politics. That belongs to another time, a more difficult time.
My pledge to you is that during these halcyon days of the post F-word era, I will END illegal rendition of the F word in public discourse. Restore honor to the blogosphere. Unite readers whose opinions differ over the showing of my navel and use of profanity. It is time to wash the slate clean.
P.S. Carl, Haneous Prop 8 is the initiative to ban legal marriage rights to gay couples in California and probably annul thousands of happy marriages. Like this. (Oh, fuck.)

Not to be a vocab fascist, but isn’t it
Heinous Prop 8?
Posted by: patrick · Nov 5, 03:20 PM · #
hairy anus prop 8 – butt if you like that WTF – marry it.
Posted by: e&sj · Nov 5, 03:45 PM · #
WOOOOO! WOOOOO!
Amazing, basking in this golden light.
Wow. This is way more than politics.
Posted by: Susan · Nov 5, 04:37 PM · #
i followed which counties of 15 in this area voted in favor of prop 8 around here and they were three big bedroom communities. two community where bordering Silicon Valley and one was a rural community. All of the other communities, all closer to universities and the center of the city, voted against this proposition. i’m not sure you can draw any conclusion from that, other than more counties here voted against the proposition. it must have been communities elsewhere in the state that voted in favor of it.

Do we have to vote for your navel now?
You cannot repress the F word, that would be discriminatory to all Glaswegians
Posted by: Gregor · Nov 5, 06:21 PM · #
The So-Cal demographics of this vote (which passed by a small margin) are nuts. Seven in 10 African Americans (who came to the polls in record numbers, of course, and wonderfully), and 2 in 3 voters over 65, voted to revoke the rights. The latter is to be expected; and as for the former remember that So-Cal is extremely segregated by race and by sexual orientation. African Americans in Compton have survived by hewing to traditional gender roles and religion that has socially conservative strains… and most of the rest of society has just plain ignored them for decades. This is a matter of reaching out, forming relationships, de-segregating, framing marriage as a civil rights issue. Turning this thing around not into a marginal win-back but a pro-gay landslide. This is a moment of massive change in social consciousness as well as demographic revolution—the change will happen quickly if relationships are formed and the envelope of civil rights ideology continues to expand. No problem. It’s good to have national attention on this issue now, because the contradictions it expresses become diamond clear.
Anyway. Enough strategy already. I’m appalled I misspelled heinous.
Puckey. I think I just lost my entitlement to the F word. Must learn to opreate in multiple syllables before I reduce to a vulgar one.
I do wish to rejoin the proud history of FCUK soon.
Is there anything else I’m systematically misspelling? I remember when I learned that “definitely” didn’t contain an “a.” Heinous.
Meantime, how the pewaukee am I going to swear?
I request euphemisms please. Effing horsefeathers poppycock goshdarn piffle.

Oh I forgot. This is blimey amazing. I’d give it it’s own post but worry that only Karen and RE will really appreciate.
Not the first time I’ve been breathtaken by Mary Jo Bang.
Bang!
Posted by: (0v0) · Nov 5, 08:28 PM · #
Yeah I know blimey is not an adjective. I’m new at this.
Posted by: (0v0) · Nov 5, 08:29 PM · #
It can be used adjectivally. With ‘ ‘.
Posted by: meniscusmerangue · Nov 6, 01:26 AM · #
In Glasgow we sometimes say ‘Jesus’, instead of F. This is because the F word has no equivalent, it is bigger in scope and nuance. Just like Jesus. It helps if you use an exclamation mark. Though I don’t think it will go down well in Compton. Crikey is a little underpowered, like blimey, and then if you use them, we know you are being ironic, and really mean F.
sigh.

When should we accept that life is only
an exaggerated form of special pleading, romanticized beyond saying
into moon, stone, flock and trees.
Lovely

yes, MJ Bang paints such vivid landscapes with her words.
nothing is lost. nothing is lost. nothing is lost.
